Dr. Xiong’s research group aims to advance the science at interface of polymer science, environmental chemistry, and membrane materials science to address challenges in materials and resource circularity and sustainability, and control of emerging pollutions in natural and built environment. More information about previous and current work can be found at http://xiongboya.com.

Ph.D.

Dr. Xiong is seeking one talented and motivated Ph.D. student to join the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering at the University of Minnesota, starting 2021 summer/fall. The ideal candidate has a M.S. degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, material science, environmental engineering/ science, or a closely related field. Exceptional B.S. level candidates will also be considered. Past experience in novel membrane materials, polymer science, advanced polymeric chemical and material characterization, protein engineering are highly recommended to apply. The ability to work collaboratively and interdisciplinarily with strong written and communication skills is highly desired. We are still accepting applicants even if official deadline has passed. Application procedure can be found on Department website. Email Prof. Xiong to inquire deadline of application. Interested students are encouraged to contact Dr. Xiong directly at bxiong@umn.edu with email subjects as “2021 CEGE PhD application”. Please attach a curriculum vita in the email, including your GPA, the contact information of three references, and a full list of publication if applicable.

Postdoc

A postdoc position is immediately available in the Xiong’s lab at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geo-Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Boya Xiong is seeking a highly motivated postdoc to develop a hybrid degradation process for converting end-of-life plastic waste into valuable products. The ideal candidate has a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, material science, environmental engineering/ science, or a closely related field. Past experience in polymer science and engineering, polymer materials characterization for chemical and mechanical properties (e.g., DSC, GPC, tensile testing, X-ray scattering), hands-on reactor design and optimization, is highly desired. Experience in growing engineered microbial culture is also desired. The ability to work collaboratively and interdisciplinarily with strong written and communication skills is highly desired. The position is for 1 year and is annually renewable depending on performance and availability of funding. The successful candidate will receive training in professional and personal development, research collaboration, presentation and publication of results, outreach, and mentoring. The position includes a competitive salary and health insurance. Applications should include: (i) brief cover letter, (ii) curriculum vitae, (iii) a brief description of past research accomplishments and future research goals (under two pages), and (v) the names and contact information for three references. All materials should be submitted as a single combined PDF to Boya Xiong (bxiong@umn.edu) with “Postdoc Application” in the subject line. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. A near-term start date is desired.
