Dr. Yang Deng, an assistant professor in environmental engineering at University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, recently won a NSF grant through Institute of Functional Nanomaterials for his project “Activation of Dioxygen with Bimetallic Zero-Valent Iron Nanoparticles for Remediating Organic and Arsenic Contaminated Groundwater” ($200,000). This two-year project under NSF EPSCoR program is to develop an innovative, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective nanomaterial-based oxidative remediation process for reduction of toxic species in water that have great adverse impacts on human health. The arsenic removal tests in this project will be completed in the laboratory of Dr. Wei-xian Zhang at Lehigh University.
